Corporate Protection Services

These days, it cannot  have avoided your attention, that cybercrime and hacking protection is needed for not just large corporations but also for SME’s (small and medium sized business).

The Institute of Directors (IOD) in their October Edition 2015 of the Director Magazine discussed how Cybercrime issues are essential to business planning. Within weeks of being published one of the very largest breaches of data occurred with TalkTalk losing data of approximately 4 million customers. Their tale is not a lonely one, as organisations such as Sony, The National Crime Agency Carphone Warehouse and Ashley Maddisson were also recent targets.

Whereas Large Organisations place greater emphasis on this, it is the SME’s that are at most risk. They have less resources in terms of time and money to expend on deterrence and protection. They however, have the most to lose. Sunday Times figure show that a weekly spend on internet services within the UK is £847m. This expected to rise considerably year-on-year. Customers who fear the safety of their data on one site will simply switch to another.

The loss of customers is but one consequence. The Regulator may impose fines on the business and its Directors. A breach can create huge brand reputational damage and can discourage inward investment.

DON’T BE COMPLACENT!

Even though breaches on the scale of TalkTalk are rare, cyber-attacks on businesses and their customers are happening all the time. Businesses need to be constantly vigilant.

The problem will only get worse not better for 3 reasons:

  1. The growth of the “Internet of Things” will result in devices talking to each other. A failure to protect security breaches can result in data passing between these devices. By the end of 2015 it is estimated that over 5 billion devices will be communicating to each other worldwide. By the end of 2020 that figure is estimated to be in the region of 25 billion devices. More devices mean more areas of potential breach.
  2. Employees often use personal devices to undertake certain work. Think of the personal smart phone that accepts business calls and emails. The use of such devices is set to grow and with it further areas for a breach.
  3. As the money defrauded from such criminal acts grows, so will the number of criminals seeking to benefit from it.  Just one Russian crime syndicate were recently found to have 500 million email addresses that they had accumulated from 420,000 websites. Once you look at the number of criminal gangs worldwide all seeking to benefit from the same thing; it becomes abundantly clear how the problem will grow exponentially.

BEWARE THE DEVIL WITHIN

Often breaches of data are not achieved by simply hacking into a company’s data. Many times it involves an insider. Companies therefore need to be able to monitor employees and detect breaches externally. Companies rely on their internal security team but this isn’t always ideal if they are the culprits. In short who is policing your security team?

What about the police? Sadly they are usually playing catch up. They wait for a breach before they investigate it. Even then the speed of the response depends upon their current workload and resources. No matter how much the politicians may talk about cybercrime being a top concern in reality the resources are simply not ploughed into it. Official crime statistics will always be skewed towards violent crime and burglaries; as this is the crime that is seen. Cybercrime is in the shadows and faceless.
